David Pereira

David Pereira is one of Australia’s most accomplished cellists and cello teachers.

His career has allowed him to be principal cellist of both the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (3 years part-time), of the Australian Chamber Orchestra (7 years), and to be cellist of the Australia Ensemble (11 years). After a decade of part-time teaching at Sydney Conservatorium, he took up a Senior Lectureship in Cello at the ANU School of Music in 1991 – at a time when that school still had a strong identity as a performance-focused institution. Recently, after 25 years, he has left the ANU to return to full-time freelance activity. His cello teaching now spans 40 uninterrupted years and his playing reaches past 50 years.

Meanwhile he has enjoyed an uncommonly versatile professional musical experience that has included concerto performances with major and minor orchestras and conductors, recital, chamber, festival, guest leading, premiering of new works, visiting artist teaching, artistic direction, conducting, concert series presentation, pedagogical writing and composing.

David so far has not needed to retire and is enthusiastic to be allowed at least another 20 years of normal productivity. Born in Macksville September 21 of 1953 he now mixes daily cello practice with that of Yoga (Vinyasa Flow) and in January 2015 graduated as instructor in that discipline. He teaches Yoga classes in a beautiful dance studio at Canberra Dance Theatre 3 times per week. [See www.settledmindyoga.com]

Keen cello students can find him in Canberra, at home in Murrumbateman, and in Sydney most Sundays at the new and inspirational Charisma Music Academy in Ryde. Newly important to his teaching outreach is his You Tube channel – David Pereira Australian Cellist.

His two main cello teachers were John Painter who helped him to graduate Student of the Year from Sydney Con. In 1975 and then Fritz Magg (Indiana University). However his technique, musicianship and associated philosophies now are determinedly individual – he takes full responsibility for anything missing!

In 2010 David received the CityNews Artist of the Year Award, having been selected by The Canberra Critics’ Circle – ‘for making his mark on music in Canberra and the immediate region with his cello-focused David Pereira Cello Series, which demonstrated his ability to interpret different compositional styles; and for his encouragement of young associate artists which stamps him as an outstanding figure in the Canberra arts scene.’ This series is about to be revivified at the new ACT Music Hub at Ainslie Arts Centre. David is extensively recorded on the Tall Poppies label.

His cello is an excellent-sounding ‘mongrel’ from the first half of the 18th century.
